Top Ten Reasons to Move to St. Cloud, Minnesota

When my wife and I decided in 2010 to move to St. Cloud, Minnesota, we had no expectations, other than to live near our grandchildren.  We were warned about winters and mosquitoes by folks in our former town, Denver. If anything, our expectations were low.

St. Cloud has been a very pleasant surprise.  We've discovered many good reasons to live here.

Here are our top ten-

1. St Cloud is the perfect size town.  There are plenty of things to do. We have a vibrant, growing downtown, a leading State University (as well as several other colleges nearby), numerous restaurant and shopping choices, and much more. Yet our city is small enough to be able to drive a short distance to any of our venues.

2. St. Cloud is affordable.  St. Cloud's median home sales price is $147,000, as compared to approximately $220,000 for the Twin Cities.

3. A River Runs Through It.  The mighty Mississippi flows diagonally through the center of our city, and is a sight to behold. Take a walk or bike ride along Riverside Drive near Munsinger Gardens and observe the beauty of this natural wonder.

4. The Flowers at Munsinger Gardens.  Munsinger Gardens and Clemens Gardens are two of St. Cloud's most popular tourist attractions. Folks come from all over central Minnesota to walk through the shade-covered, tranquil oasis of flowers.

5. Lake George at Eastman Park.  Lake George is to St. Cloud as Central Park is to Manhattan. It's located in the heart of St. Cloud, and is a neighborhood hub. It's also a multipurpose park, where folks enjoy picnics, jogging round the lake, ice skating in the winter, and canoes in the summer. Summertime by George is a series of concerts that are extremely popular in the community and attract thousands.

6. St. Cloud has a great Art Scene.  Our community is filled with art-themed events.  The Paramount Theater hosts live concerts, community theater, and its visual center exhibits art and has numerous art classes. Live music is huge in central Minnesota.  Go to the aroundthecloud website for a complete list of local art events.

7. Outdoor activities are numerous.  If you enjoy golf, central Minnesota is a paradise of affordable golf courses.  Oak Hill is one of my favorites. We have lots of public tennis courts, parks, and bike and pedestrian paths. In the winter, if fishing from a heated portable fish house is not for you, how about pickleball?

8. The weather can be great.  Let's be honest. Winter can last a bit long, spring can be damp and cool. When warmer weather arrives, however, central Minnesota can be a very fine place to be. All that gorgeous plant-life emerges, birds are nesting everywhere and the air smells sweet. It's time to play golf.  Autumn is also gorgeous.

9. Local restaurants have arrived.  St. Cloud is starting to see more local non-chain restaurants with good quality.  Highly recommended are the White Horse, the Pickled Loon, and Jules Bistro and are located downtown. Central Perk is a great place for a coffee, dessert or sandwich.  Ciatti's serves great Italian food.  Of course, you could always drive to the twin cities, but why bother?

10. We have a great public radio station.  Finally, a shameless plug for KVSC, 88.1FM or stream it live at kvsc.org.  As one of its disc jockeys, I can tell you that we have the freedom to play all kinds of music! KVSC is also known throughout the state for Trivia Weekend
